FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Where can I stay when I’m in Brisbane?

A: There is plenty of accommodation options in central Brisbane.  Click here for a few options.

Q: Will my health insurance cover all of my costs?

A: This varies with the fund and the procedure.  In general health funds provide some assistance with surgical costs but as their pool of money is limited they are not often able to pay for everything.  This creates the “gap” which will be discussed during your informed financial consent.

Q: How do I make an appointment and do I need a referral?

A: Please call the rooms on 3834 7011 to make an appointment.  A referral is necessary in order to claim a Medicare rebate for your consultation and provides history and background helpful for Dr Mackay.  If you are a WorkCover patient and won’t be claiming through Medicare a referral is not vital.

Q: What should I bring to my appointment?

A: Please bring your referral and any relevant scans or x-rays including the reports.  It is helpful to have your Medicare and private health insurance information as well.

Q: How long after my consultation can I have surgery?

A: We will endevour to fit you in as soon as possible and in most cases within a week.  If you have a traumatic injury this is often the same or following day.

Q:What is the cost of a consultation and can I claim this with my health fund?

A: The cost for an initial consultation is $180.00 and $85.00 for a review consultation.  Your health fund does not offer any rebate for these services (considered outpatient services) however you can claim a rebate from Medicare if you have a current referral from a doctor.  The rebates are $72.75 from an initial consultation and $36.55 for a review consultation.

Q: Does Dr Mackay see Veterans Affairs and WorkCover patients?

A: Yes, Dr Mackay is happy to treat Veterans Affairs and WorkCover patients.

Q: Does Dr Mackay consult or operate anywhere other than Brisbane Private Hospital?

A: No,  Dr Mackay only treats patients at Brisbane Private Hospital.

Q: Is parking available?

A: There is a carpark under the Brisbane Private Hospital.  This can be accessed via Birley St or Lilley St.  This carpark is billed at normal inner city car parking rates.  This car park is sometimes full and you may need to try one of the other car parking stations on Wickham Terrace.  There is also metered street parking around Wickham Terrace.  We are also a short walk from Central and Roma Street Train Stations.
